Ankle Injuries

There are not many people who haven’t experienced an ankle injury at some point in their lives. Whether it be while playing sports, missing a step or getting your foot stuck with a fall. While a simple ankle sprain is the most common ankle injury, there are many more possibilities for the cause of your ankle pain which you can read about below. Haven’t “rolled” your ankle? You may be suffering from one of these other causes.

What can cause ankle pain?

There are many different structures that can cause pain in and around your ankle. These can be muscle tendons, ankle ligaments, the bones or joints themselves. You may even be experiencing referred pain from other bodily areas.

Can I suffer from multiple issues at the same time? Yes! In fact, with more moderate to severe injuries it is not uncommon to develop multiple problems. For example, a lateral ankle sprain with an associated ankle impingement and peroneal tendinopathy. As a result, “simple” rolled ankles can be quite complex to treat. Therefore, seeking appropriate treatment is an important part in your recovery.

Why do I keep rolling the same ankle?

The answer is because of something called proprioception. Proprioception is you brains ability to know exactly where your foot is in space. When we sprain our ankle ligaments or tendons, we no longer have a clear picture of the angles our foot is in. As a result, we can place our foot on the ground at an odd angle and “roll” it again quite easily.

How do I improve Proprioception?

This is a key component in your recovery from all types of ankle injuries. It is something your therapist will spend time teaching you in your sessions and prescribe you exercises to take home and practise. In a nutshell we could describe these as “balance” based exercises. We progress these slowly, making them specific to your activities. This will help reduce your incidence of recurrence. (Schiftan et al, 2015)
