The GLA:D® Program is a physiotherapy-led, evidence-based program designed for people with hip and knee osteoarthritis. Delivered at our Malvern clinic, it focuses on education, guided exercise and building confidence with movement in a structured and supportive environment.
What is the GLA:D Program
GLA:D® (Good Life with osteoArthritis in Denmark) is an internationally recognised program developed to support people managing hip and knee osteoarthritis.
The program combines education and exercise to help improve movement, support joint health and build confidence in daily activities.
At our clinic, the GLA:D® Program is delivered by physiotherapists in a small-group setting, providing individual guidance while following a structured approach.
Who This May Be Suitable For
The GLA:D® Program may be appropriate for people who:
- Have hip or knee osteoarthritis
- Experience joint pain, stiffness or reduced confidence with movement
- Are looking for a structured, non-surgical approach to managing symptoms
- Are unsure what type of exercise is suitable
- Want guidance from a physiotherapist in a supported setting
Programs are adapted to suit different starting points, and you do not need prior experience with exercise to begin.
What to Expect
The program includes a combination of education and exercise sessions.
You will begin with an initial physiotherapy assessment to understand your symptoms, goals and current capacity.
The program may include:
- Education about osteoarthritis and joint health
- Progressive strengthening exercises for hips and knees
- Movement strategies and load management
- Guidance on returning to everyday activities
Sessions are delivered in a small group environment, with supervision to support technique and progression.
How the Program is Delivered
GLA:D® is delivered as part of a structured physiotherapy pathway.
This typically includes:
- Initial physiotherapy assessment
- A series of Clinical Exercise Group sessions (1 physiotherapist to 3 participants)
- Ongoing review and progression based on your needs
Each participant follows an individualised program within the group setting, allowing exercises to be adjusted as required.
Exercise Approach
The exercise component focuses on improving strength, movement and joint capacity over time.
Sessions may include:
- Mat work and controlled movement
- Strength and functional exercises
- Gradual progression based on your ability and comfort
Private Health Rebates
GLA:D® sessions are delivered as physiotherapy services.
- May be claimable with physiotherapy extras cover
- Invoice provided for self-claiming
We recommend checking with your health fund to confirm your level of cover.
Ongoing Care
The GLA:D® Program forms part of a broader approach to supporting joint health.
After completing the initial program, you may choose to continue with supervised exercise or transition into other suitable options based on your goals.
Getting Started
To begin the GLA:D® Program, an initial physiotherapy assessment at our Malvern clinic is required.
This allows us to determine whether the program is suitable for you and to develop an appropriate starting plan.
