There are risks associated with all health procedures. Serious and permanent harm arising from osteopathic treatment, massage therapy, exercise physiology, exercise therapy and pilates is extremely rare; however, temporary soreness and exacerbations are relatively common.
There are no accurate figures available on adverse reactions or incidence of injury associated with osteopathic manipulation in Australia. The incidence is so rare that it is difficult to compile accurate statistics. Similar techniques applied by chiropractors in various studies have been associated with stroke like symptoms in 1:50,000 to 1:5 million manipulations. It is an assumption that the risks of osteopathic manipulation may carry the same risk. The research also fails to distinguish between stroke like symptoms caused solely by manipulation, and by manipulation where the events in progress have caused the patient to seek treatment in the first place.
I understand, and I am informed that, in the practice of osteopathy (including osteopathic cervical manipulation), massage therapy, exercise physiology, exercise therapy and pilates there are some very slight risks to treatment, including, but not limited to, muscle and joint soreness, muscle strains, joint/ligament sprains, inflammation, fractures, disc injuries, strokes or stroke like episodes, damage to nerves and blood vessels, and transient ischaemic attack.
Dry needling and cupping may be advised and performed by your practitioner during your treatment. Dry needling is a therapy where sterile, single use acupuncture needles are specifically inserted into tender points in muscles. All care is taken to ensure your safety by taking a through case history, using single use sterile needles, and an alcohol swab. There are some risks associated with the dry needling. These include, but are not limited to, infection, bruising, pain, and puncture of blood vessels, nerves and lungs. Cupping involves placing a glass or plastic cup, sometimes heated with the aid of an accelerant to create suction, on the skin. Risks include, but are not limited to, bruising and burning of the skin.
